The Buffalo Niagara Brewers Association (BNBA) was officially formed in December 2013 with the sole purpose of promoting and advocating on behalf of the regional craft brewing industry. On behalf of our BNBA Board of Directors, we would like to respectfully request your consideration to join our Association through an annual membership (Please see attached membership application).

According to the national Brewer’s Association, the number of breweries in the U.S. has risen dramatically in the last several decades. In 1979 there were just 89 licensed breweries in operation in the U.S.; today there are over 2,500. This includes the Buffalo-Niagara region as the number of breweries here is also expanding. With twelve breweries/brewpubs open or set to open and several in-planning our total regional brewery-brewpub count will increase to sixteen in 2014. Also expected to open this year are two malt houses, one in Lockport and one in Batavia.

The mission of the BNBA is to promote and advocate on behalf the regional craft brew industry. One of the ways we plan to do this is through various festivals throughout the region, including the annual Buffalo Beer Week, which is a ten day celebration of Buffalo’s unique craft beer and beer making heritage.

There are significant benefits of being a member of the BNBA the primary one being the various festivals and events that we will manage and promote throughout the year. We are confident that your membership will provide you with significant return on investment through the exposure you will get through the promotion of these festivals and events. These activities will create greater awareness of craft brews and the craft brew industry which in turn will result in more people enjoying craft beer, including people from outside the region coming here to spend money!

Buffalo Beer Week is an excellent example of how craft brewers are generating a positive tourism impact as people from the surrounding counties of Western New York, including Rochester as well as Southern Ontario are attending various events and activities associated with this annual 10 day happening. This celebration of Buffalo’s beer making heritage and the related events is bringing more and more visitors to the area as Buffalo Beer Week and our planned festivals continue to grow.

The craft beer industry has a significant economic development impact as it pertains to supply chain. For example, hops are an especially labor intensive crop to raise that require farmers to hire workers, buy equipment and contract various services. Craft brewers, especially farm brewers, need prodigious amounts of locally grown hops and malt. In addition to skilled workers, brewers also need to purchase storage tanks, kegs, fittings, and other specialized brewing equipment. Craft brewers, who are customers of farms also increase business for distributors, retailers, pubs, restaurants, and hotels. There are also new brewing programs coming up in the area which will train future brewing staff for the local beer & beer-hospitality industry. Government leaders such as New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo have recognized the positive impacts of the craft brew industry through initiatives like “Taste NY”. The Governor and the State Legislature recently passed legislation that supports craft breweries, increases demand for locally grown farm products and expands industry related economic development and tourism.

While we rely on the New York State Brewers Association to manage issues at the state level, the BNBA is all about promoting the craft brew industry in Western New York. The BNBA is also in a unique position to help promotional efforts at various state, regional, and local levels by using our network and digital properties to coordinate the growing array of events and festivals taking place . That is why your membership in the BNBA is vitally important to fulfilling our mission on behalf of the local industry and supply chain partners here.

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Buffalo Niagara Brewers Association, thank you for considering membership in our organization. If you would like to discuss membership in the BNBA in further detail please do not hesitate to contact us.
